Anyone who uses crutches to walk knows the excruciating pain traditional crutch grips cause to the hands. With existing grips, body weight is supported between the thumb and index finger on a rounded piece of wood, plastic or metal.
The Robbins Grip is an innovative, ergonomic crutch grip, designed to keep both the wrist and hand in a more natural position. The creative angle on the Robbins Grip provides greater comfort than traditional grips, allowing users to be supported by the palm of the hand while the fingers curve easily over the Robbins Grip.
With the Robbins Grip, there is reduced pressure and stress on the wrists and fingers. Crutch users with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Arthritis have found the Robbins Grip to be a safer alternative for their conditions. The Robbins Grip also prevents trauma to growing bones, muscles and tendons in young patients, who may not fully realize the damage of traditional grips until middle age or later.
Simple Set-up
1. Order a pair of Robbins Grips at www.robbinsgrips.com.
2. Unscrew the wing-nut on the side of the crutch and slide out the metal rod. Remove the existing grip and replace with the Robbins Grip.
3. Insert the rod back into the crutch through the grip and tighten the wing-nut. Your new Robbins Grip is now secure.
Testing
Testing on the Robbins Crutch Grip, performed by Dr. Kenneth Leitch, PE, West Texas A&M University Engineering and Computer Science Department, shows the load capacity of the grips to ensure they will not break during normal usage of individuals up to a weight of 400 lbs.
The polycarbonate material used shows no change from extreme winter to extreme summer temperatures and will not break under normal use.
Cleaning
Polycarbonate materials are readily attacked by solvents such as acetone (nail polish remover) and ammonia and may leach enocrine disrupters by use of alkali and bleach solutions. Solvents cause grips to become brittle and break. Cleaning should be with regular soap and water or alcohol. The may also be cleaned with dishwater.
